Case Study: Replacement windows for Blueprint Studios, Manchester

We recently completed a project at Blueprint Studios on Queen Street in Salford. A well-known hotspot for recording music talent, artists have included Elbow, Justin Timberlake and Snoop Dogg to name a few. Blueprint Studios also made a recent appearance on the BBC1 TV programme “Project icon: The UK’s Next Music Star”.

The client required replacement windows which would not only make the studio building more thermally efficient, but would also add to its acoustic performance with external sound reduction. Our team at Droylsden Glass discussed our recommendations with the client, and together we decided on the ideal solution.

Acoustic glazing for unique Manchester property

To cater for the unique appearance of the Blueprint Studios building whilst delivering on the required acoustic qualities, we suggested a solution which we knew could be customised, offering the best way to fit any aesthetic whilst simultaneously increasing thermal performance.

Following our consultation, the client agreed to proceed with our recommendation of new replacement uPVC windows, specifically Deceuninck 2500 Tilt & Turn casement windows in Rosewood, with high specification acoustic glazing. The acoustic glass we offer at Droylsden Glass makes a huge difference, being able to provide noise reduction of up to more than 50dB, ensuring that artists are able to record in the studio with optimum soundproofing conditions and minimal noise pollution, plus that the sound produced will not disturb the studio’s neighbours.

The client’s goal was to achieve a Rw and Ctr of 40dB or above, aiming to get just the right glazing thickness to balance good lower end performance and great high end performance, as glass that is too thick can negatively impact higher frequencies of sound. With this in mind, the soundproof glass specification decided upon was very high, using Guardian Glass with 6mm clear float, 10.76 (55.2) LamiGlass (PVB), and warm edge spacers.

The use of uPVC windows meant that we were able to choose a design which fit with the building’s internal and external aesthetic without impacting on performance. The installation of the replacement windows will increase the building’s thermal insulation, minimising heat loss and lowering energy bills at a crucial time.
